Finding Home in the People Around Us

This picture is from a long ago Christmas but the

feeling is the same - It's the people who make it feel like home.

 I consider myself very lucky.

I have kind, caring, and generous friends in both my homes. In each of them, I’ve found people who listen, who show up, and who make life feel a little better just by being there.

There are all kinds of friendships that we make and keep as we grow through life.
Childhood friends.
High school friends.
College friends.
Work friends.
Neighbors and Community group friends.

And now… these.

I often hear people say that as we get older, friendships are harder to make. That may be true but I’ve also learned that connection is still possible at any age.

When you move into a new community, or find yourself starting over in some way, it can begin with small, simple things.

• A smile
• Looking someone in the eye
• Asking a question
• Listening
• Being open
• Being genuine
• Being willing to show up

It’s not always easy, and it doesn’t happen overnight. (You also can’t force it.)

When it does, you may find yourself surrounded by people who become more than just acquaintances. You may find lifelong friends. And that is a gift, no matter where you are.

As I’ve shared in Caitlin’s Star, love has a way of staying with us, even as our lives change. Sometimes, it also has a way of finding us again in new places, through new people, when we need it most.
