A Very Special Message


Today my daughter was unpacking boxes in her new home when she found an old photograph of herself with my parents. It was from when she was about six years old. It was special because both my parents were in the picture with her - usually my dad was the one taking the pictures.

Taped to the back was a handwritten note from her grandmother that she had never seen before. It said, 


"Dear Caitlin,

My heart will always be with you. 

Love you,

 Mom Mom."

She told me it felt as though her grandmother had reached down from heaven just to say hello.

When she told me about the note, I couldn't help but look up through my tears and whisper, "Thank you, Mom."

Sometimes we think memories live only in our minds.

But sometimes they're taped on the back of a photograph or they're tucked into a book. They may be hidden on a recipe card or written on a tiny piece of paper, waiting for exactly the right moment to be found.

Maybe that's one way love continues.

Maybe the people we miss still find ways to remind us they're part of our story.

As my daughter begins an exciting new chapter in her life, she has one more gift to place on the wall; not just the photograph, but a message that traveled through time.

I believe that some discoveries aren't accidents. They're little stars that are waiting to be found at exactly the right moment.

When Connection Isn't Immediate

  A place to sit with the day  This morning, I wrote about my yoga intention of being brave and taking a step forward.  Later in the day, I was reminded that sometimes that step doesn’t lead to where we expect.  There are moments in life when we reach out sincerely, simply hoping for connection and sometimes, nothing comes back right away. There’s a pause, a space that can feel larger than it really is.  In that space, it’s easy to start questioning ourselves.  Did I say the wrong thing? Was the timing off? Should I have done things differently? Our minds can play tricks on us and fill in the blanks far too quickly. But perhaps that space is not ours to carry. Perhaps it just is what it is. Still Me

  Yesterday I found myself thinking about the ten year old girl I used to be. Today my thoughts moved forward again into another stage of life and what love has meant along the way. It’s funny how our minds sometimes wander back to earlier chapters of our lives. Moments when everything felt new and full of possibility. Like springtime. There is a kind of ache or yearning that can come with those memories, and for the longest time I couldn’t quite name it. Maybe it is my age now but I think I figured it out. Sometimes the yearning we feel when we look back at earlier moments in our lives isn’t about another person at all. It’s about who we were when we were living in that moment.
